Spot Market Slows Slightly but Remains Strong 

The spot market for van and reefer truckloads dropped slightly last week but load demand continues to surpass available drivers and equipment. Los Angeles ranked number one for van demand followed by Texas and Chicago. Refrigerated load demand remained the strongest out of Michigan, Idaho, Washington and North Dakota. Containers Stranded on Maersk Enshi

The release of cargo that is currently stranded aboard the Maersk Enshi (voyage 740N) continues to be unknown. Local authorities have seized the ship and continue to investigate its recent collision with a fishing boat in the East China Sea. The vessel has been at anchor near Taizhou since October 12.

Antidumping (AD) duty scrutiny continues as the U.S. Department of Commerce initiated a new investigation into imports of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin from Brazil, Indonesia, Korea, Pakistan and Taiwan this week. Click here to read more.

Italian Truckers to Strike

According to reports, a national truck driver strike will occur in Italy on October 30 and 31. Localized strikes will take place in the port city of Genoa again from November 2 through 4. Please also note that November 1 is the Italian National Day holiday. Logistics operations are expected to be delayed in the short-term due to the holiday and strikes.

Private Labels to Power Retail?

The focus on private label brands is increasing as market share rises and shoppers show they are willing to make substitutions. Many of the largest retailers (including Walmart, Amazon, Target and Kroger) have made announcements about various initiatives for their private labels. Instead of focusing on the low-cost aspect, many retailers are working to build separate identities from major national brands. Click here to read more. 

Amazon Launches 'Buiness Prime'.png

Amazon Launches Business Prime

This week Amazon launched Business Prime Shipping, a membership service for U.S. and German businesses. The new service offers free two-day delivery for companies paying more than $499 a year. One analyst estimates the U.S. business-to-business transaction market will reach $1.2 trillion by 2021 with online purchases becoming more common. Click here to read more. 

Statistic of the Week

50,000 Drivers

The potential shortfall of truck drivers in the U.S. by the end of this year, as estimated by the American Trucking Association (ATA). If the trend continues, the ATA projects that the driver shortage could increase to 174,000 by 2026.
