Due to wildfires in California, the Hours of Service (HOS) regulations have been temporarily suspended for truck drivers assisting with debris removal and delivering of emergency supplies in the area. Click here to read more.

Spot Market Continues to Strengthen

The truckload spot market continued to strengthen during the month of September with the DAT reporting there are 6.6 available loads per truck. This is the highest ratio recorded in eight years. Click here to read more.

U.S. Import Forecast

According to the Global Port Tracker, U.S. imports are expected to reach 1.72 million TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) this month, a 2.8 percent increase compared to October 2016. The report states imports are expected to decrease 1.7 percent during November and increase 1.3 percent during December, compared year-over-year.

Please note that Trans-Pacific Eastbound Trade carriers have announced a General Rate Increase (GRI) in the amount of $20/CBM, $40/MT, $900/20', $1,000/40', $1,000/40'HQ and $1,265/45', to become effective November 15, 2017. Ascent Global Logistics will continue to work diligently with carriers to mitigate this GRI in support of our clients.

Santos Customs Delays

Customs officers at the Port of Santos, the largest container port in South America, are planning to begin go-slow tactics on October 16 with a full strike to commence on November 1 if demands are not met. The slowdown is expected to delay 3,000 containers a day and more than triple the average timeframe for cargo to clear customs in Brazil.

Kroger to Possibly Sell Its Convenience Stores

Kroger said this week that it is exploring the sale of nearly 800 convenience stores. The largest U.S. supermarket chain stated it wants to refocus on its core retail food business while strengthening its online presence. Click here to read more. 

Walmart to Limit Future Store Openings.png

Walmart to Limit Future Store Openings & Concentrate on Ecommerce

Walmart plans to open fewer than 15 supercenters and 10 neighborhood markets in the U.S. during fiscal 2019, half of the stores it intends to open in fiscal 2018. Walmart has increasingly been concentrating on ecommerce and announced this week that it will speed up the in-store process for return of online purchases with the help of the Walmart app. Click here to read more.

The number of imported containers of goods, measured in TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units), at major U.S. ports during the month of August, according to the Global Port Tracker report.
