Driver Wait Time & Charges Expected to Increase due to Holidays and ELD

Driver Wait Time & Charges Expected to Increase due to Holidays and ELD

The busy holiday shipping season and quickly approaching ELD (Electronic Logging Device) mandate are expected to have an impact on driver wait times and shipping costs. In expectation of congestion and additional scrutiny of HOS (Hours of Service) due to ELDs, many carriers are beginning to identify shippers that commonly cause drivers to wait for long periods of time. As a result, please be aware that driver wait time charges could increase or carriers could prioritize capacity space for preferred shippers. As a proactive step, shippers should ensure cargo is ready and on the dock at the scheduled pick up time and appropriate labor is available at the time of delivery.

A recent survey by JDA shows that shoppers are picking up online purchases in stores instead of opting for delivery. According to the data, half of consumers say they have ordered online and picked up in store, 44 percent more than the 2015 survey results.
