Imports Expected to Jump in February 

According to the latest Global Port Tracker report, U.S. container imports of retail goods are expected to increase slightly this month before jumping 12.6 percent during February. The sudden leap is largely due to the influx of goods shipped before factories close for the Chinese New Year holiday. Click here to read more. 

COSCO Delays 10 Mega-Ship Orders

COSCO Delays 10 Mega-Ship Orders

According to the JOC, COSCO Shipping plans to delay the delivery of 10 mega-ships, or 166,576 TEUs, until 2019. Yang Ming also recently delayed three 14,000 TEU vessels that it expected to enter the market this year. Despite the delays, roughly 1.3 million TEUs are still expected to be added to the global capacity in 2018.

Global Piracy Decreases

According to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), piracy and armed robbery of vessels at sea have hit a 22-year low. During 2017, 136 vessels were boarded, 22 vessels underwent attempted attacks, 16 were fired upon and six were hijacked. In the Southeast Asia region, incidents near Indonesia decreased while occurrences near the Philippines more than doubled. Click here to read more.

Walmart Tests Text Shopping

Walmart Announces Expansion of Mobile Express Scan & Go 

Walmart recently announced that it will expand the testing of its Mobile Express Scan & Go app to an additional 100 stores throughout the United States. The app allows shoppers to scan and bag items, including produce, then pay directly with smartphones. Click here to watch the video.

Target's Investment in Stores Pays Off

According to the most recent reports, Target's comparable sales, profit forecasts and the number of in-store shoppers increased during the holidays. The success is being attributed to the retailer's focus on improving stores, delivery logistics and customer service. Click here to read more.

*Please note that Ascent Global Logistics offices will be open on Monday, January 15, however, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Other Government Agency offices will be closed or operating with limited staff which could impact customs clearance and cargo release. 


Please remember that the Chinese New Year (CNY), which will occur from February 16-21, 2018, is quickly approaching. Importers should be communicating with suppliers to ensure orders are approved and bookings are made well in advance. The CNY holiday will cause origin operations to cease during the official holiday dates with the potential to impact production and shipping for more than one month.
