California Fires Cause Logistical Delays

The Thomas Fire continues to impact logistical operations across Southern California this week. The red flag warning is expected to continue through Friday and lingering aftermath is projected to persist well beyond the holiday season. ELD Update

ELD Update 

With less than a week until the ELD (Electronic Logging Device) mandate takes effect, a recent poll showed that out of 1,620 owner operator respondents, 49 percent have not yet selected an ELD. While the mandate will become effective on Monday, December 18, enforcement will be phased in over the next four months. As of April 1, 2018, drivers found to be noncompliant could be put out of service. Click here to read more.

APM Terminals to No Longer Store Chassis at NY-NJ Port

The decision by APM Terminals to cease on-site storage of chassis at the Port of NY-NJ could potentially increase the time it takes truckers to pick up and drop off containers and could result in additional costs for shippers. As of January 15, the drayage equipment will be stored at two off-site chassis depot locations in an effort to free up terminal space for upgrades.

FMC Issues Final Report on Congestion

The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) recently published a final report based on findings by its Supply Chain Innovation team. One suggestion is to develop a National Seaport Information Portal providing shippers with real-time data including chassis availability, CBP hours and activities, ship arrival times and information about container yard storage. Chittagong Delays 

New scales on two major highways near the Port of Chittagong are causing delays and resulting in additional costs. A new policy, introduced on December 1, prompted the installation of scales to weigh container-laden vehicles travelling on the highway. If a truck is found to exceed the maximum allowable weight, it is sent back to the sourcing point and assessed a fine.

Retailers Race for Last Minute Holiday Sales

The nation's largest retailers are busy promoting last minute shopping deals while major retail ports work to process containers filed with inventory replenishments. Some of the new promotions announced this week include Target's "Green Monday" and Walmart's expansion of same-day in-store pickup. Click here to read more.

2018 Retail Trends: Meal Kits 

Walmart recently became the next big-box retailer to debut meal kits on its website, joining Amazon, Publix, Unilever and Kroger. Walmart has reportedly partnered with Home Chef and Takeout Kit to offer customers packages containing a recipe and the ingredients to prepare a fresh meal. Click here to read more. 

Statistic of the Week

19 Million 

The volume of U.S. container imports from January through October, measured in TEU's (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units), as reported by PIERS. This is a 5.5 percent increase compared to the same period in 2016.
