Gravitation to Density Based Pricing Continues

Following a number of other trucking companies, ABF Freight will introduce a cubic minimum charge (CMC), also known as a density minimum charge (DMC), next month. The introduction of CMC charges supports the increasing trend towards the density based pricing model and implementation of dimensioners across the industry. These tools help carriers accurately and quickly obtain the dimensions of a shipment. If the accurate weight, product description or NMFC number is incorrectly provided by the shipper, the probability of additional fees being assessed due to reweighs could increase. Global Air Freight Demand Rises 

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported that global air cargo demand increased 12.7 percent year-over-year during the month of May. Outside of Latin America, all regions recorded double-digit growth, with Europe in the lead. Click here to read more.

NRF Announces Top 100 Retailers

The National Retail Federation (NRF) recently announced the top 100 retailers in its STORES magazine. Wal-Mart Stores ranked number one with the NRF noting that supply chain logistics is the key to the big-box retailer's ability to operate a successful brick and mortar and online presence. The Kroger Co., Costco, The Home Depot and CVS Caremark rounded out the top five. Click here to read more.

COSCO to Buy OOCL

In an increasing trend of ocean carrier consolidation, COSCO Shipping Holdings recently announced it plans to buy Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) for $6.3 billion. The combined entity would have more than 400 ships and a total capacity of 2.9 million TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units). Click here to read more.

Is the U.S. Distribution Network Evolving?

The expanded Panama Canal and raising of the Bayonne Bridge is allowing larger-than-ever containerships to call at East Coast ports. As a result, East Coast import volumes are increasing with the potential to alter U.S. trucking routes. A decrease in the need for long hauls from the West Coast could cause an increase in demand for regional hauls on the East Coast. Click here to read more.

Turnover at Truckload Companies Increases 

According to the American Trucking Association (ATA) the turnover rate at U.S. truckload fleets increased three percentage points during the first quarter of 2017. However, the rate remains near historically low levels and is 15 points lower compared to 2016. Click here to read more.

Maersk Update

Following the June 27 cyber attack, Maersk Line and APM Terminals (APMT) operations have now resumed. The cyber attack did not impact the physical handling of containers but did create disruption in new bookings, arrival notices, customs clearance and communication with customer service. Due to the backlog, terminal congestion has been reported at APMT facilities in Los Angeles-Long Beach, New York-New Jersey, Rotterdam and other major cargo hubs. Click here to read more. 

Statistic of the Month

$46.5 Billion

The U.S. international trade deficit during the month of May. This is a decrease from $47.6 billion during April. Exports increased $0.9 billion while imports decreased $0.2 billion. Click here to read the full report.
